Here at Highfield we firmly believe that everyone can achieve in mathematics. In January of 2018 the Maths department embarked on a new mastery teaching approach at Key Stage 2 with a greater emphasis on reasoning and problem solving, and with a small-steps approach to the curriculum. Students are given the time to gain a deep understanding of the topics covered; students demonstrate this depth of understanding through their representations and verbal/written explanations. Maths teachers have taken part in bar model training and students are gaining confidence in using this tool.

At Highfield, children are placed in sets according to their learning needs; all groups follow the same curriculum with teaching, activities and resources adapted to challenge and support learners in different groups. Teaching Assistants work alongside teachers in most groups, supporting pupils to make their next steps. Lessons will often feature paired, group and whole class discussion where children can communicate their ideas using the correct Mathematical vocabulary.

Well-designed lessons will include variation which builds fluency and will also interlink topics. Children have the opportunity to work collaboratively before being expected to demonstrate their independent skills. We aim to provide a positive learning environment where pupils can challenge themselves and each other, to make mistakes and have the resilience to learn from them.

For children who require additional support, weekly intervention will be delivered to small groups of children by experienced teaching staff or teaching assistants. At Key Stage 2, the Success@Arithmetic program is delivered by a trained teaching assistant.

We aim to teach mathematics in a way which challenges, engages and motivates our pupils, inspiring them to enjoy mathematics and appreciate its importance and relevance in the real world.
