Highfield Travels Back In Time
Students at Highfield have started a journey back in time to WWI …
Highfield Middle School have started a research project about the World War One Centenary Battlefield Tour. Two assemblies have been presented, one with year 8 and one with the whole school, about the battlefield tour. The News Team then handed out sheets with the 93 names of the soldiers that came from Prudhoe and sadly died in the war.
We showed the school pictures of the cemeteries and some of the people that died, as well as facts, including how many people died: 17 million people died and 20 million were wounded however there were 900,000 British deaths – the students were shocked by these statistics.
On the 1st of July, 1916 20,000 soldiers died during ‘the big push’ which is also known as the Battle of the Somme; when the pupils visited the battlefields, they visited the trenches from that horrific battle. Prior to that, they went to the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium - at 8pm every night there is a special ceremony to remember the soldiers who died in the war. Also, in the Menin Gate, there are names of almost 55,000 soldiers that died and whose bodies were never found.
